Bristol based furniture maker Rhys Gillard originally trained in Technical Theatre at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. However after ten years of scenery and prop making in a professional theatre workshop environment decided to retrain in Fine Furniture making under the direction of Marc Fish, a recipient of three guild marks by the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers
During his time on the course Rhys had a high level of craftsmanship instilled in him from the beginning. Along side traditional furniture and cabinet making techniques students where encouraged to explore new technologies and materials such as glass, plastic and composites all of which can be incorporated in to bespoke pieces to create interest, functionality or originality.
As Head Of Construction at the Salisbury Playhouse Theatre Rhys worked on numerous productions creating a vast array of scenery, props and special effects for various theatre designers. Working closely with these designers on both scenery and items of furniture for the productions helped to influence and educate Rhys in aspects of design and furniture periods. Having a working knowledge of such a wide range of styles he does not restrict himself to one period although he achieves greatest satisfaction from more modern contemporary pieces.
